Serbian shooter Ivana Maksimovic won the 100th Olympic medal for Serbia. Our best tennis player Novak Djokovic did not manage to win a medal, since he was defeated in the match for the bronze by Argentinean del Potro. Men’s handball team has finished participation in the Games in a loss from the direct rival for the qualification to the second phase – Hungary. Swimmer Milorad Cavic also failed in attempt to win a medal, as he finished the final race in the fourth place. Last weekend, the water polo team was victorious, while the volleyball selection earned one point against the heavily favorized Brazil. Igor Dejanovic has more details in today’s Olympic Roundup.
Serbian shooting representative Ivana Maksimovic admits she is still not fully aware of the success achieved by winning a medal in her Olympic debut. “I feel as with any other competition and any other medal. Still, I believe tomorrow it will hit me, because this is my biggest success in the career”, said 22-year old Maksimovic. The winner of the first Serbian medal at this year’s Games in the 10-meter air pistol event, Andrija Zlatic did not manage to earn another medal in the small caliber pistol event at 50 meters. In the final, he placed 6th with the result 655.9, and the chance for the medal was lost in the final series, when he only hit the result 7.6. The gold was taken by Jongoh Jin from the South Korea, silver to his compatriot Young Rae Choi and the bronze to Chinese Zhiwei Wang. Unlike Zlatic, our other representative Damir Mikec did not even qualify for the final.
The men’s handball selection of Serbia ended their participation already with the first phase of the competition. In the last round of the pool matches, our team lost to Hungary with 26:23. The European vice champions would have qualified for the next round even with a tie match, but they failed to achieve it. For the first 45 minutes of the duel, Serbia was constantly in the lead, but never managed to solve the match and achieve the three-goal advantage. In the last 15 minutes, our selection played badly, primarily on defense, so in the quarter-final Hungary will meet Iceland.
Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic failed to win the bronze medal in London, after losing the match to Juan Martin del Potro, with the result 2:0. That way, Argentina won its first medal in these Olympic Games.
Swimmer Milorad Cavic has ended his Olympic career by taking the 4th place in the butterfly stroke 100m race in London. The title in this event was taken by American Michael Phelps, so this is the 17th gold out of his 18 gold and 22 total medals, thus making him the most successful Olympian in history. The second and third positions were shared by Chad Le Clos from the South Africa and Evgeny Korotyshkin from Russia, who ended the race in 51.44 seconds.
Most experienced Serbian athlete Olivera Jevtic did not finish the marathon race in London, while Ana Subotic placed 71st. The victory belongs to Ethiopian Tiki Gelana, who set the new Olympic record at 2:23:07. The silver was taken by Priscah Jeptoo from Kenya and the bronze by Tatiana Petrova Arkhipova from Russia.
The men’s volleyball selection of Serbia lost to Brazil with the result 3:2 in the fourth round of the Pool B in the Olympic tournament. This way our team has the equal number of points as Germany, so it may qualify for the quarter-final even with the minimal defeat by Russia.
The national water polo team was victorious against USA with 11:6 in the fourth round of the Group B. They have thus taken over the lead in the group with 7 points, followed by USA, Montenegro and Hungary. In the last round, the selection of head coach Dejan Udovicic meets Romania.
